Coach's Cat-5 Sports Picks

High Winds. High Picks. No Shelter Needed.

EYE OF THE HURRICANE 🌀 🏴‍☠️

When you think of sports weekends in June, you really don’t think it will be just that exciting. But, guess what folks - it is. Its a HUGE weekend with lots of games, predictions and recaps. A fun time for your FanDuel account possibly as well.

Jannik Skinner started off the day sweeping Novak Djokovic in the French Open semi-finals. The Djoker showed his age, proving father time remains undefeated. Skill vs skill the two played and looked even. But, at the end of the day, a 23 year old had fresher legs than a 38 year old. Regardless of where he ranks all time.

NCAA HOUSE SETTLEMENT RULED 📖 🧑‍⚖️ ⚖️

It started in 1997 with Ed O’Bannon with UCLA. Fast forward 25+ years later, Shawne Alston, a runningback from West Virginia, brought this case back up to the courts. Friday, the California court ruled in favor of the players.

Colleges and networks made billions of dollars in TV revenue, sponsorships, video games, etc. on player Names, Images and Likenesses and the players never received a penny. Well, Friday, the courts announced back-players are due $2.8 Billion.

  • Athletes who played between 2016-2021 (before the NIL process) will receive backpay.

  • School basically are now allowed to pay players directly. Somewhere around $20-$25 Million.

  • College athletics as you knew it growing up is DEAD. It is now more semi-professional than anything else.

IN 2OT PANTHERS EVEN SERIES 🏒 🏆️

In what started off as a shootout, quickly turned to a defensive and physical grind. In the end, the Florida Panthers send the series back to the Sunshine state, tied a 1-1.

Just 2:09 into the game Sam Bennett scored his 3rd goals of the Stanley Cup finals for the Panthers. This was just the beginning as the first period was long but over. Evander Kane evened it up with a Florida turnover. Followed quickly by Evan Bouchard getting an immediate second chance and connecting on it after his first shot was blocked, giving Florida a 2-1 lead. Still in the 1st, Seth Jones took a thru-puck and beat the Edmonton net mender. Exactly 60 seconds later, Leon Draisaitl scored his 3rd of the championships after a McNasty skate-thru by David McDavid assisting it off to Draisaitl.

Florida’s defense locked-down in the 2nd. The shot of the night came from defenseman Dmitry Kulikov as he scored from the blue line tied it up. Four minutes later, short-handed, Brad Marchand received a lead out pass and beat the Edmonton goalie, retaking the lead 4-3.

In the third, Florida desperately tried holding on. Edmonton pulled their goalie and played the 6-5 advantage. With just 0:17 remaining, Corey Perry tied it up and sent the already electric crowd into an even greater frenzy.

Twenty minutes of the first Overtime block was not enough, as the two teams found themselves in a 2nd OT. Finally, twelve minutes into the 5th frame, Brad Marchand found himself 1v1 with the Edmonton goalie again. This time, he went through the legs and the puck just went through crossing fully over the goal line and thus gave Florida the road victory.

The series heads to Florida Monday night.

COASTAL AFTER DARK TAKES 1-0 LEAD AT AUBURN ⚾️ 🐓 🐅

A tale of three games. All wrapped up in a 10 inning, rain delayed marathon between the Coastal Carolina Chanticleers and the Auburn Tigers. A battle in the Auburn Super Regionals with a trip to Omaha on the line.

Part 1 - Coastal jumped out to a 6-3 lead ending at the Top of the 6th. Cade Bodine went yard and Blagen Pado hit two homers (4 RBIs). Cameron Flukey struck out 4 over 5 innings for the Chants.

For Auburn, Ike Irish doubled early and went on to score the game’s first run giving Auburn the 1-0 lead. Chase Fralick made his way around the bases for the Tigers 2nd run. And in the bottom of the 5th, Ike Irish went yard cutting Auburn’s deficit to 6-3.

Part 2 - Enter an 1 hour 45 minute plus rain delay.

The truth is Griffin Graves buried Coastal’s hitting for the next three innings not even allowing a single hit.

Bristol Carter scored on a throwing error in the 6th to further cut the deficit to 6-4. Then, after Cooper McMurray scored, Eric turned the rain to Snow as the Auburn 3rd Baseman crushed one over War Eagle Wall, thus tying the game.

Then in the Bottom of the 9th both Terrell and Irish walked giving Auburn runners on 1st and 2nd with no outs.

Part 3 - After Cooper McMurray struck out from a Matthew Potok pitch, it was the beginning of the Blake Barthol show. The 2nd Baseman made a true highlight of a diving catch from Lucas Steele’s bat and turned it into a double play getting the Chants out of a tight jam.

To the Top of the 10th with one out. On his 2nd pitch, Cade Bodine hit one that could’ve hit Toomer’s Corner he blasted it so far. (Actually, where Plainsman Park is located, it more than likely would’ve hit the Chick-fil-A inside Auburn’s Student Union building!)

To close out at, the Blake Barthol experience played an encore. With one out and a runner on 2nd, the impressive 2B made yet another diving catch and tossing the ball over to the SS to cover 2nd, catching Eric Snow off the bag to end the game.

Chants took Game 1 of the best of three series. Game 2 has a quick turnaround, as Game 1 ended at 2:18 AM ET and the sequel begins at 3:00 PM ET. 12 Hours and 42 Minutes from end of game.
